Title: RIS Student Engineering Tech Assistant
Department: WashU IT Research Infrastructure Services
Salary/Hours: $17/hr for 20 – 40 hours/week – SP22 & SU22
Position Summary:
Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) is seeking a student technology candidate with Mac, Windows, and Linux operating system skills to work directly with our customer support team. This position requires communication, documentation, and customer service skills as well as the ability to use a wide variety of technical resources (i.e., vendor resources, search expertise, etc.) to provide a high level of technical support. A desire to learn new technologies is very important as is the ability to work remotely, being self-motivated, detail-orientated and organized.
The Research Infrastructure Services hardware and computing environment has a diverse technical stack and offers exposure to a wide variety of technology. The ability to learn on the job, master new skills, and work remotely, but within a team is a critical requirement. The technologies our team embraces are vast, some of what you will work with if you join our team includes:
- High performance computing and storage technologies
- Docker containerized environments
- Statistical or computational environments (R, SPSS, Stata, Python, etc.)
- The Atlassian suite of team collaboration tools: Jira, Confluence, Bamboo, Bitbucket
Job Duties:
- Work with HPC Research Facilitators to support customers by responding to and fulfilling service desk requests
- Work with HPC research facilitators to develop user facing manuals for the high-performance computing and storage environments
- Update project statuses within Jira by documenting task details, completion steps, delays, etc.
Functional Duties:
- Ability to work remotely with minimal supervision with a high degree of accuracy
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new circumstances
- Experience using all standard office productivity applications and computing platforms in an enterprise environment
- Ability to understand, be accountable, and complete assigned tasks associated with projects
- Able to adjust to changes in priorities and demands on time
- Good organizational skills: ability to prioritize workload to appropriately respond to customer needs and demands on time
- Strong customer service skills, including written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent language and people skills
Qualifications: Must meet basic STaRS hiring criteria: Full-time student with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, in good academic and judicial standing
